Drawing from the visual worlds of science and nature, the human figure, the grand tradition of American illustration, Japanese scroll paintings and woodblock prints, fantasy illustration, and great artists of Europe, Elliott’s work strikes the viewer at first with a powerful tableau and draws them in to experience the subtlety and beauty within. Beyond the pictorial impact of his work, themes personal to him such as body image, environmental preservation, and social and psychological repression weave themselves throughout his work.

The Artist Within Vol. 2

Craig Elliott

Greg Preston's "The Artist Within, Volume 2" is nearing completion, and I am proud to be one of the artists along with some people I have worked with, John Musker, John Lasseter, Chris Sanders, Glen Keane, and Alex Nino.

My teacher from Art Center is also in there, Harry Carmean.
These aren't the final shots that will be in the book, by the way. They are even better than these!

Moleskine Project #3

Craig Elliott

A new painting in oils on a pair of Moleskine sketchbook pages for a show in San Francisco December 5th.  I will probably paint this much larger soon.
Come to the opening or stop by the gallery in December!

Need an Art Deco frame? Make one!

Craig Elliott

Final steps of making the Art Deco Frame:

1. the frame gets clamped to the workbench, and the outer and inner edges are routed to round them off, one side at a time.

2. I made 2 little wings of oak from 1/4 round moulding by sanding off the corners to make each one round, then they are glued on.

3. The final frame stained and with the portrait of Carlye Pollack.

STEP 1:

1. Gluing up the blocks from bit of scrap oak and even some oak from old pallets.

2. The blank blocks of oak cut to size and ready to go.

3. The routing inside for the painting, and slots cut for the biscuits that hold the corners together.

4. The main part of the frame glued together with a test fit of the painting.

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man's only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.
